Upholstery Cleaning

1. Vacuum the Upholstery

  • Start by vacuuming the entire surface of the sofa to remove dirt, dust, pet hair, and debris. Use a soft brush attachment to avoid damaging the fabric, especially if the sofa has delicate upholstery.

2. Check Fabric Care Instructions

  • Before steam cleaning, check the fabric care tag on your sofa for any specific cleaning instructions. Some fabrics may not be suitable for steam cleaning, so make sure it’s safe to do so.
  • Common fabric codes:
    • W: Water-based cleaning solutions are safe.
    • S: Solvent-based cleaning solutions are recommended.
    • SW: Both water and solvent-based solutions can be used.
    • X: Professional cleaning only.

3. Pre-Spray with Upholstery Cleaning Chemical

Before starting with the steam cleaning process, apply an upholstery cleaning chemical as a pre-spray to the fabric. This will help loosen dirt and stains from the upholstery fibers, making it easier to steam clean. Ensure the cleaner is suitable for your sofa’s fabric type. Allow the pre-spray to sit for a few minutes to allow the solution to penetrate and break down any embedded grime.

4. Prepare the Steam Cleaner

  • Fill the Tank: Fill your steam cleaner with hot water (not boiling). Some steam cleaners may require a cleaning solution for upholstery, so check your machine’s instructions.
  • Attach Upholstery Tool: Attach the upholstery tool or nozzle designed for fabric cleaning to your steam cleaner.

5. Steam Clean the Upholstery

  • Start from the Top: Begin cleaning from the top of the sofa and work your way down. This prevents any dirt or water from dripping onto already cleaned areas.
  • Steam in Small Sections: Move the steam cleaner in small sections. Hold the steam nozzle a few inches away from the fabric to avoid getting it too wet.
  • Use a Back-and-Forth Motion: Move the steam cleaner in a slow, steady back-and-forth motion to allow the steam to penetrate deeply into the fabric.

6. Focus on Stubborn Stains

  • For stubborn stains or heavily soiled areas, use a soft brush (or a clean cloth) to gently scrub the area after steaming. Steam cleaning helps loosen dirt, and the brush will help lift it.
  • Continue steaming over the stains until they are clean.

7.Allow the Uplholstery to Dry

  • Air Dry: Let the sofa air dry completely. Open windows or use fans to speed up the drying time.
  • Drying Time: Depending on the fabric, drying could take anywhere from 4-12 hours. Don’t sit on the sofa until it’s fully dry to avoid transferring moisture back into the fabric.
